What are you breathing? We all face a variety of risks to our health on a day-to-day basis and nowhere is this more prevalent than in our homes. The quality of the air in your home can significantly impact the quality of your life as indoor air quality has been linked to several health hazards. While many of the health risks that you are exposed to throughout the day are unavoidable, the pollutants inside your home can easily be controlled or eliminated.
According to the National Air Duct Cleaners Association, HVAC (Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning) systems act as a source for collecting a variety of contaminants with significant adverse health effects. This group of contaminants often includes mold, fungi, bacteria, allergens and dust (containing dust mites). The regular removal of these contaminants should be a large part of your family’s plan to improve the air quality in your home.

You undoubtedly get Air Duct Cleaning coupons in the mail claiming a “Whole House Special ONLY $99!” Don’t believe it. Here is how the $99 bait and switch scam works:
The bait and switch scam first started with small print limiting the number of vents and mains that are cleaned in your home. Typically the small print would read: Whole House Special $99 (The bait) “Includes 7 Supply vents, 1 Return vent and 1 Main trunk.” You will certainly have more ductwork than what their “special” includes. Here comes the switch. Miraculously the additional ductwork in your home, not to mention your furnace (not included in the special) will cost anywhere from an additional $300 to $2000. All they needed was a foot in the door. Unfortunately, a good percentage of people can’t defend against these scam artists aggressive, well rehearsed, high pressure sales techniques.
The word got out about these limited number of vent scams so the game has recently changed. Now the small print reads “Unlimited supply vents, unlimited return vent, includes Furnace.” How generous! Not exactly. The new technique is to explain to you “the unusual length of your ductwork, especially the main trunk” Of course, this unusual length of ductwork will cost more, albeit the additional charges are not as high as before but they can run anywhere from $300 to $800.
Any way you slice it the “$99 Whole House Special” for air duct cleaning is a scam. Just ask the Better Business Bureau. The decision has been made, you are having your air ducts professionally cleaned. The only thing left now is to select the right company for the job. In Seattle there are three different types of companies from which you can choose. Here is a look at your three options:
Option 1 – HVAC Companies
These guys specialize in everything heating and cooling including the installation of furnaces, boilers, A/C units and the latest geothermal gear. The life-line of their business is not air duct cleaning but the sales and installation of new equipment. As a result their air duct cleaning service is often part of a larger sales pitch. Many HVAC companies are able to offer substantial savings on the equipment they sell by taking advantage of dealer discounts. However, there is no dealer to discount air duct cleaning so their pricing is typically higher than the competition.
Option 2 – Air Duct Cleaning Specialists
The heart and soul of their business is air duct cleaning. You will find a range from one man operations to mid-sized companies with 15-20 technicians on staff. You will generally receive a better experience with an air duct cleaning specialist as the survival of their business depends on it. However, the larger the business gets the less control of quality they have over their technician. You are looking for a company with 4-5 employees and a commitment to personal service. A Seattle duct cleaning company like Better Air NW (shameless plug). All kidding aside, it does make sense to work with a small to medium sized company with a laser beam focus on air duct cleaning alone.
Option 3 – $99 Special Companies
Good Heavens, do not choose option number three. This is equivelant to a donkey behind door number one when the convertible is behind door number two. These are largely out of state companies who saturate the market with flyers exclaiming this incredible special. The special does not exist and you end up with an aggressive sales person pitching the price of full package at your dinner table. Once the market has been fully saturated they pull their advertising and move to the next market with no concern of their reputation. Afterall, as P.T. Barnum said “There’s a sucker born every minute.”
